There is no single answer to the best time to sail in Greece. The country has six cruising areas with six distinct wind regimes, and the answer depends as much on the area as on the month. This calendar crosses both dimensions: destination and month.

First, choose the right area

Before talking months, settle the area. The fundamental split in Greece is between the Ionian Sea (Ionian Islands: Maestro, 10-18 kt, predictable) and the Aegean Sea (Cyclades: Meltemi, 20-30 kt in July-August, demanding). That difference completely changes how you read the calendar.

Month by month

April. Ionian: a pleasant start, an occasional Maestro (7-14 kt), water 17-19°C, few crowds, low prices, ideal for experienced crews seeking quiet. Saronic: a good early season, light winds, good for a first charter. Cyclades: too early, an occasional Meltemi and cold water, confident only. Crete: possible but an unpredictable Meltemi.

May. Ionian: well open, a steady 8-15 kt Maestro, water 19-21°C, one of the best months for a first Ionian charter. Saronic: excellent. Cyclades: good, an occasional 10-18 kt Meltemi, intermediates can sail comfortably. Dodecanese: an excellent window, moderate wind, warm water.

June. Ionian: optimal, a daily 10-16 kt Maestro, water 22-24°C. The ideal month for a first Greek charter in any area. Cyclades: the best month for the central Cyclades, the Meltemi in (12-22 kt) but not yet peaking; the Paros-Naxos-Santorini circuit is doable by intermediates. Saronic: very good, few crowds.

July. Ionian: high season but excellent sailing, a daily 12-18 kt Maestro, water 25-27°C, packed anchorages, peak prices. Cyclades: the Meltemi at its peak (20-30 kt), confident crews only, not the month for a first Cyclades trip. Dodecanese: a moderate Meltemi (15-25 kt), sailable by intermediates, the warmest water in Greece (26-28°C).

August. Ionian: as July, the warmest water of the year. Absolute peak crowds; reach Antipaxos before 11am. Cyclades: still strong but easing after the 15th, still for confident crews. Saronic: a good month, Meltemi softened by the relief.

September. All areas: the connoisseurs' month. Crowds fall sharply after mid-August, the Meltemi eases, water stays warm (22-26°C), charter prices drop 20-30% and anchorages free up. Probably the best month to sail anywhere in Greece. Cyclades in September are finally accessible to intermediates (Meltemi 12-20 kt).

October. Ionian: still very pleasant, variable Maestro, water 22-24°C, tavernas open to month-end. Cyclades: quiet returns but weather is less predictable, experienced crews only. Dodecanese: still a good season thanks to its southern position.

Booking timing

July-August: book 4 to 6 months ahead; catamarans go first. June and September: 6 to 10 weeks ahead for popular areas (Ionian, Cyclades). May and October: 3 to 4 weeks is often enough.
