Crete a different way, along its north-east coast, more sheltered than the wild west: the Gulf of Mirabello, the island-fortress of Spinalonga, the fishing hamlet of Mochlos and Venetian Sitia. Around 100 miles from Agios Nikolaos, in one of the rare pockets of Cretan cruising with relative shelter, dotted with Minoan sites. Intermediate to confident depending on the Meltemi. What to understand about the area

The Gulf of Mirabello, the Cretan shelter. This large north-east bay offers one of the few Cretan sails with relative shelter, with Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Spinalonga grouped together. Beyond, toward Sitia, the coast becomes exposed to the Meltemi at the capes again.

A Crete of sites as much as anchorages. Spinalonga (a Venetian leper colony), Mochlos and its Minoan islet, the palace of Malia to the west: culture is right at the waterline.

Self-sufficiency recommended. Harbour stops are spread out; take on water, fuel and provisions at Agios Nikolaos and Sitia.

Day by day

Day 1: Agios Nikolaos to Spinalonga (Elounda), 6 NM, ~1 h 30

Sailing: a short warm-up in the Gulf of Mirabello.

Anchorage: the very sheltered Elounda bay, or an anchorage off Spinalonga.

Ashore: the island-fortress of Spinalonga, a former leper colony, a must-see.

Warning: shoals and oyster beds in the Elounda lagoon, enter by eye.

Day 2: Elounda to Mochlos, 15 NM, ~3 h

Sailing: along the north-east coast to the hamlet of Mochlos.

Anchorage: an anchorage off Mochlos and its Minoan islet, fair holding in calm weather.

Plan B: back into the Gulf of Mirabello if the Meltemi builds.

Warning: the anchorage is open to the north, judge by the wind.

Day 3: Mochlos to Sitia, 20 NM, ~4 h

Sailing: a more exposed leg east, Meltemi possible at the capes.

Anchorage: Sitia harbour, decent quay and shelter, a pleasant Venetian town.

Warning: leave early, the wind builds in the afternoon.

Day 4: Sitia, day and Vai beach, 12 NM round trip

Sailing: an excursion to the Vai palm grove, a day anchorage in calm weather, or a day ashore.

Anchorage: back to Sitia for the night.

Warning: the Cape Sideros coast is very exposed, do not linger there in established wind.

Day 5: Sitia to Mochlos, 20 NM, ~4 h

Sailing: back west, often downwind with the Meltemi.

Anchorage: Mochlos, or push on to Pseira.

Warning: a leg in the lee of the capes, more comfortable than on the way out.

Day 6: Mochlos to Pseira and the Gulf of Mirabello, 15 NM, ~3 h

Sailing: coasting to the islet of Pseira (a Minoan site) then back into the gulf.

Anchorage: Agios Nikolaos or Elounda bay.

Warning: the Pseira anchorage is open, a day stop.

Day 7: back to Agios Nikolaos, 12 NM, ~2 h 30

Sailing: a last sail in the gulf. Refuel before handover.

Variations and personalisation

Discovery version. Stay in the Gulf of Mirabello (Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Spinalonga, Pseira), with short legs and plenty of time ashore for the sites.

Experienced version. Push to the island of Koufonisi to the south-east, or cross to Kasos and Karpathos, committing and exposed, for solid crews only.

Cyclades combination variant. Reach Santorini from the north of Crete (a ~65-mile crossing), to plan with a real weather window, over 10 to 14 days.

By season. May-June and September for a manageable sea; avoid high summer for a novice crew.

A word from the crew

Logbook. The Gulf of Mirabello at first light, the water glassy and Spinalonga emerging from the mist, offers a calmed Crete you don't expect from this island known to be rugged. And at Mochlos, dining with your feet in the water facing the Minoan islet, time stops.

The mistake to avoid. Heading for Sitia or Cape Sideros in the afternoon. The Meltemi accelerates at the capes; sail in the morning and keep the gulf as a refuge.

Our favourite, and what we skip. Favourite: Spinalonga and Elounda bay. What we skip: pushing stubbornly toward the exposed south-east in heavy weather, the gulf offers beauty enough.

Our verdict. Beauty 4/5. Anchorages 3/5. Ease 3/5. Crowds 2/5. Verdict: accessible, cultural Crete, a sheltered alternative to the wild west coast, for a comfortable crew.
