Breeze & Sail

Sailing central Dalmatia

Season : April to OctoberLevel : Beginner to intermediateWind : NW thermal maestral, force 3–5

The Split–Hvar–Vis triangle concentrates everything that makes Croatia addictive: two-to-four-hour legs, gin-clear water, and a different backdrop every evening — a Venetian harbour, a deserted bay or a family konoba where the fish arrives from the boat next door.

The wind here is a metronome: calm mornings, a NW maestral building to force 3–5 after 1 pm, dying at sunset. Plan crossings for the afternoon if you want to sail, or the morning for a quiet motor — the programme is yours to choose.

Frequently asked questions

Do buoys and quays need booking?

In July–August, yes for the quays of Hvar, Milna and Korčula (ACI app or harbourmaster on VHF). Palmižana and konoba buoys are first-come — arrive before 4 pm to be safe.

Hvar town or Palmižana for the night?

Palmižana, no contest: Hvar harbour is expensive, surge-prone and loud in summer. From a buoy, taxi-boats reach Hvar in 10 minutes until midnight — the best of both worlds.

Is the crossing to Vis difficult?

It is the week's longest open-water exposure (13 open miles from the Pakleni), but in an established maestral it is a fast, joyful reach. With a forecast jugo of force 6+, postpone — Vis has no perfect southerly shelter.
