Sailing Italy: Aeolian Islands or the Bay of Naples?

For a week of sailing in Italy, choose a cruising area that fits the holiday you want. The Aeolian Islands and the Bay of Naples suggest two different plans: a trip centred on a volcanic archipelago, or sailing combined with time exploring Campania ashore.

In brief

Consider the Aeolians for a trip centred on volcanic islands, or Naples for sailing combined with shore visits. Build your week around one area.

The Aeolian Islands: make the islands the focus

North of Sicily, the archipelago comprises Lipari, Salina, Vulcano, Stromboli, Panarea, Alicudi and Filicudi. Italy's official tourism portal, Italia.it, describes these seven islands and their volcanic origins. Source: the Aeolian Islands.

A first trip need not become a race to collect all seven. Pick the stops that matter most to your crew and leave time to enjoy them. The national portal also provides ideas for exploring the Aeolians by sailboat. Use them as inspiration to adapt to your boat and conditions.

Treat any volcano-related visit as conditional. Confirm current access and instructions with the relevant authorities and local operators; a tourism description is not permission to approach. Our Aeolian Islands overview introduces the cruising area.

The Bay of Naples: combine sailing and exploring ashore

Capri, Ischia and Procida are among the islands in the bay. The surrounding coast also offers towns, archaeological sites and the Sorrento peninsula. Consider this area when part of the crew wants to spend a substantial share of the holiday sightseeing ashore. Source: Italia.it, Bay of Naples.

Decide how much shore time to allow first. Adding every island and several long excursions can leave little flexibility for sailing. Check transfers from the actual harbour and booking arrangements for land visits separately from the yacht charter. Our Bay of Naples overview helps you compare it with the Aeolians.

Choose the base and boat together

Ask for the marina's exact address, handover and return times, and the time needed for the boat inventory. Arrange transport around that information rather than just the region named in the listing.

Compare cabin layout, usable berths, equipment and the boat's advertised condition. For a skippered charter, establish the skipper's cabin arrangements and associated costs. For bareboat hire, obtain written confirmation of accepted qualifications and documents before paying a deposit.

Build a useful cost comparison

Use matching dates and crew numbers for every quote. Separate the boat price from extras, cleaning, overnight berths, fuel, groceries and transfers. Check the security deposit, insurance excess and cancellation terms as well: they may matter as much as the gap between two advertised prices.

Avoid basing the whole budget on an old invoice found online. The actual boat quote and the applicable charges at your intended stops are more useful references for your trip.

Turn the idea into a booking

Choose the Aeolians when the volcanic archipelago is the main reason for travelling. Compare the Bay of Naples when a mix of sailing, islands and shore visits matters more. In either area, make a short list of preferred stops and alternatives, then discuss them with the operator and review the forecast before departure.
